Aviators' Memorial Square

Aviators' Memorial Square

Location: Lutsk
Status: Competition project (2019)
Area: 0.36 ha

Competitive design of the square on the site of the former airfield, founded in 1915. The site is located in the microdistrict where many former aviators live. The proposal to equip the square was submitted by the Volyn Shield public organization and the Volyn aircraft amateurs’ organization.
About 30 years ago, a memorial stone was erected on the project area, with stated these words on it: "The monument will be built to the pilot KK Arceulov." Decades later, the monument has never been erected. However, the memorial stone became one of the arguments that prompted the creation of the Aviators Square on this site, and saved it from build-up. Thus, it has already become part of the history of this place, although not quite as it was supposed during installation. This motivates to preserve it and as part of the new memorial.
A new metal tablet with the short history of Volyn aviation indicated on it is attached to the memorial stone indented. In that way, it does not hide the information indicated on it, but only takes it into the background, like a layer of history that has received its logical conclusion.
The metal construction of the new memorial starts from the memorial stone and turns around the central part of the square, representing a kind of history trajectory, on which tablets with information about personalities and events in the history of Volyn aviation are chronologically articulated. While reading the plates, a person as if is looking at a flying plane, sees the heavenly surface reflected by metal, sees the sky in a text cut all the way through.
The memorial is located at the intersection of transit pedestrian paths, but provides comfortable movement for cyclists and pedestrians. At the same time, in combination with landscaping, it creates a person's feeling of a room in the open. This sensation on the one hand encourages you to stop, explore; on the other hand motivates to familiarize yourself with the story, interact with it.
